Pregnant woman dies due to 'medical negligence'

Dhaka, Bangladesh – 31st March, 2020: A pregnant woman has died at Faridpur Medical College Hospital as she was reportedly not given oxygen support. The deceased was identified as Ripa Das, 32, wife of Mithun Sarkar in Pangsha upazila of Rajbari district.

Dhiraj Kumar, a relative of the victim, said Ripa was two and a half months pregnant. She was taken to the hospital on Sunday due to internal bleeding, reports UNB. As she was under Dr Kaniz Fatema, a gynaecologist of the hospital, the physician asked her to have an abortion.

Later, she got an abortion following surgery by the physician on Sunday night.

On Monday morning, Ripa was shifted to the ward of the hospital and at one stage, she had respiratory problems. The hospital authorities could not provide any oxygen support to her despite repeated requests, said Dhiraj.

Later, she died at the hospital.

Contacted, Saifur Rahman, director of the hospital, said he had no idea about it but action will be taken after receiving a written complaint.
