Pennsylvania, US – 17th May, 2018: Bordas & Bordas has obtained a $2 million verdicts in an Allegheny County medical malpractice case.
The jury returned a $2 million verdict on Wednesday, May 16 in favor of Stanley and Marianne Truskie as a result of the death of their son, Mark, who died at the age of 46.
"It was certainly an honor to represent Stanley and Marianne Truskie in their heroic effort to honor their son's memory by protecting the safety of others suffering from mental illness. We are pleased that we were able to help them fight for justice in this case," said Geoff Brown, who represented the Truskies along with Tyler Smith.
The Allegheny County coroner determined that Mark died from toxic levels of Celexa and Clozaril, two medications used to treat his mental illness in 2013.
Psychiatrist Dr. Grace Huang of the Staunton Clinic prescribed both medications.
Evidence proved that Huang prescribed twice the allowable dose of Celexa to Mark without ever informing the Truskie family of the FDA warnings,.
The warnings showed that the medication was known to cause sudden cardiac death when prescribed above a certain dose.
"This case sends a very important message - that doctors have to know the risks of medications and need to inform their patients of those risks," said Smith in a press release.
"We hope this verdict will prevent other families from suffering a terrible loss like the Truskie family did."
