Nottingham – UK – 29th June, 2017: A mother was left ‘hysterical’ after discovering that her baby son had been circumcised without her permission. The unnamed woman from Nottingham revealed that she has been battling for authorities to take action for four years after the discovery.
Speaking to the BBC, she said that on the day of the alleged incident, she had opened her son’s nappy to find him ‘covered in blood’. The child had reportedly been staying with his paternal grandparents when he was circumcised in July 2013.
Last week, police – who have been investigating the incident – arrested three people, including a 47-year-old woman and two men aged 44 and 61.
Speaking to the BBC, the mum said: ‘I opened the nappy and I ended up having to leave the room because I felt hysterical. It was just awful really, it wasn’t very nice, there was all blood there and stuff.’ At the time of the circumcision, the child was just three-months-old.
His mother had called social services in 2014, however the incident was allegedly ‘not deemed to be a criminal matter.’ The case was referred to the General Medical Council.
Since then, the child’s mother has pushed authorities to take action – asking why ‘male genital mutilation’ is not being viewed in the same way as female genital mutilation.
Nottinghamshire Police reopened the investigation after human rights lawyer Saimo Chahal QC wrote to them.
