Canada – 10th May, 2017: A doctor was left battered and bruised by a patient she was treating during a sickening hospital attack. The woman was repeatedly punched and kicked by the brute as she was doing her rounds at Paisley Royal Alexandra Hospital shortly before midnight on Monday.
It’s understood stunned staff in the hospital ward raced to save the doctor from the unprovoked beating before cops were called. The frightening attack is the latest in a series of abuse suffered by hard-working staff at the RAH.
Just last week, a thug who spat blood in a doctor’s face and sparked a rammy with police, was jailed for 10 months.
Ross Docherty, 30, caused so much mayhem that medics cleared the A&E department of patients amid fears for their safety. Paisley Sheriff Court heard that Docherty was high on a cocktail of alcohol and prescribed drugs, when he embarked on a three-hour rampage on March 7. Two louts also faced justice in December after outbursts at the RAH.
Edward Dolla, 42, was so drunk he then urinated on himself when cops took him to the hospital to be checked over by medics. Officers found him lying on Stevenson Street in the town when he jumped up and attacked them.
While boozed-up Rosemary Docherty, 45, also frightened patients at the packed-out A&E department and challenged cops to a “square go”. Both thugs were handed community payback orders.
John Paul Barrett, 27, and 24-year-old Kieran Craig were both jailed for causing trouble at the RAH. Barret was handed 100 days in prison for causing a rammy after he was treated for a drugs overdose. And Craig was banged-up for 100 days for lashing out at cops who took him to the hospital for treament.
Last year, the Paisley Daily Express, revealed doctors, nurses and paramedics were subjected to almost 200 physical assaults in just 11 months. And yesterday, Paisley Inspector Tracy Harkins said police in Paisley have a zero tolerance approach to attacks on hospital staff.
She added: “This doctor was subjected to an assault as she tried to treat a patient. That will not be tolerated. Hospital staff should be able to carry out their jobs without fear of abuse, either verbal or physical. I would encourage anyone who witnesses any incidents of abuse at the RAH to call police immediately.”
An NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde spokeswoman last night said: “We can confirm that an incident occurred on Monday evening at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. The doctor involved required treatment within our emergency department before being discharged. The incident is now a police matter.”
She added: “NHSGGC has a strict Violence and Aggression Policy regarding violence and aggression against our staff who are entitled to work free of threats, assaults and intimidation. All our staff deserve basic courtesy and respect and to be able to work without fear of intimidation, abuse or violence. We fully encourage and support staff in their pursuit of taking the perpetrators of violence against them through the justice system. Where possible we will ensure individuals who attack our staff will be prosecuted.”
A 57-year-old man was due to appear at Paisley Sheriff Court yesterday afternoon in connection with assault charges.
