Iowa, US – 13th June, 2018: A Sioux County jury on Wednesday awarded nearly $30 million to the family of a Hull, Iowa, woman who died after having a CT scan at a local hospital.
Jurors found that Dr. Roy Slice was negligent in his treatment of Carrie DeJongh and that Sioux Center Health was liable for his negligence. Jurors awarded DeJongh's husband and children $29.5 million for DeJongh's pain and suffering and the loss of consortium suffered by her husband and their children..
DeJongh died June 9, 2015, after undergoing a CT scan at the Sioux Center hospital. She alerted staff that she was having problems after contrast dye was administered to her. She later died at a Sioux Falls hospital.
Her husband, Jeffrey, sued Slice and Sioux Center Health in August 2016 in Sioux County District Court, claiming that Slice, an emergency room physician, was negligent in the medical care he provided to Carrie DeJongh and that that negligence caused her death.
Slice and the hospital had denied the negligence claims. The case went to trial on June 5.
