Georgia woman has been awarded $70 million in a medical malpractice lawsuit that resulted in her waking up with no legs.

The jury in Dougherty County reached a verdict in under 30 minutes after hearing evidence over two and a half weeks.

Camilla woman Jessica Powell, now 40, claimed that a medication overdose and subsequent botched medical treatment in 2013 led to the amputation of both of her legs above the knee.

What happened to Jessica Powell?

The incident began when Powell, then 28, collapsed at home due to a combination of hormone deficiency and a stomach virus.

She was rushed to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany for emergency care. However, Powell alleges that the treatment she received was negligent, resulting in the loss of her legs.

The lawsuit, filed against three Albany doctors and their medical practices, argued that the person received a reckless medication overdose.

The other side argued that "the care and treatment Ms Powell received at Phoebe (Putney Memorial Hospital) from Dr Palazzolo and others was necessary to save her life and preserve the function of her brain and other vital organs,' said Dr. James Palazzolo in his outline of the case, the Atlanta Journal reported.

On Wednesday, April 23, nearly 12 years after the incident, she won $70 million in this case.
