Further tests needed to establish cause of baby’s death | Cyprus Mail

Specialised histological, genetic and other tests are expected to show a cause of death for one month old baby that died this week at the Makarios hospital.

A postmortem that went on for many hours on Saturday, carried out by state pathologists Angeliki Papetta and Orthodoxos Orthodoxou, did not show a cause of death.

Samples were taken so that further histological, genetic, microbiological and virological tests can be carried out.

Meanwhile a police investigation is continuing and members of the CID Limassol have already started collecting statements.

The parents of the baby have made charged of medical negligence.

The boy had been transferred to Makarios from Limassol general hospital on Thursday night with high fever.

The baby was intubated but died at midday Friday.

The baby had been admitted with a fever on Wednesday to Limassol general hospital’s paediatric clinic. After his condition worsened the next day, he was transferred to Makarios hospital in Nicosia and was admitted to the ICU.

Doctors tried to stabilise his condition and performed surgery. The infant’s condition showed some improvement but after a few hours he presented serious hypotension, severe acidosis, and multi-organ failure.
