Patient dies after surgery at Tseung Kwan O Hospital, allegations of medical negligence arise

A woman suffering from terminal pancreatic cancer passed away after surgery at Tseung Kwan O Hospital in February. Following her death, her son received anonymous calls and letters containing hospital documents that alleged medical negligence on the part of the surgeon, Dr. Hung.

Tim Pang Hung-cheong, a community organiser with the Patients’ Rights Association, reached out to the deceased’s family and noted that during an April meeting, Dr. Hung had admitted to making a mistake during the surgery, which resulted in the patient’s bleeding. However, a subsequent written response from the hospital in July did not mention this error. Pang expressed concern that hospitals often issue cautious and vague written replies to avoid legal liability, leaving families dissatisfied with the discrepancies between verbal and written communications. He hopes for a thorough investigation into the incident.
