  • The amount will be alloted from the Chief Minister's distress relief fund
  • Home department will conduct a separate inquiry into the incident
  • Harshina had planned to start an agitation in front of Secretariat

Kerala Cabinet on Wednesday decided to provide Rs 2 lakh compensation to a 32-year-old victim of medical negligence. The amount will be alloted to Kozhikode native Harshina from Chief Minister’s disaster relief fund. The move came ahead of Harshina’s plan to start an agitation in front of the Secretariat demanding justice.

A statement issued by the office of Chief Minister said that the Home department will conduct a separate inquiry into the incident as two investigations conducted by the health department failed to find out the medical procedure which caused the negligence that left forceps in her body. Harshina was subjected to three surgeries in various government hospitals. Investigations conducted based on the directive of Health Minister Veena George were inconclusive.

Harshina, however, said that the Government’s response felt like an insult to her. She said that she would go ahead with the protest as she wanted justice.

Harshina had to suffer physical and mental agony for several years after forceps was left inside her following a surgery.

Earlier this month, Harshina had begun a strike in front of the Government Medical College hospital seeking justice. Following this, Minister Veena George visited her and promised to resolve the issue soon. Harshina had withdrawn her strike following the meeting with the Minister.

The other day Harshina had announced her plan to start her strike soon in front of the Government Secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram. Harshina was also planning to approach the High Court demanding justice.
