Shamli: In yet another incident of severe medical negligence, three elderly women in Shamli district of Uttar Pradesh were given anti-rabies vaccines in place of COVID jabs they came to get.

The incident took place at a government hospital on Thursday. The woman had gone to the hospital to get COVID shots.

The district officials have accepted the medical negligence following a probe, according to a report in NDTV online.

The three victims have been identified as Saroj (70), Anarkali (72), and Satyawati (60). The women slightly fell ill after the wrongs shots were administered at the Community Health Centre in Shamli.

"We have received a detailed report about the incident. We found the women had gone for their Covid vaccinations but by mistake they did not go to the first-floor vaccination centre and instead went to the OPD, where the pharmacist, who was leaving for some work, asked a private person-the pharmacist of a 'Jan Aushadi Kendra'-to give them anti-rabies shots," the report quoted Jasjit Kaur, Shamli District Magistrate as saying in a video statement.

Later, an inquiry found that the person administered the wrong shots without any questions or checks. The DM said she has instructed the Chief Medical Officer to suspend the pharmacist for negligence.

One of the victims, Anarkali, said she was sure that she was given anti-rabies vaccine meant for dog bites. "I felt dizzy after returning home. I had doubts at the hospital too when I was not asked for my Aadhaar card necessary for people getting COVID vaccine registration," Anarkali said.

Another victim Satyawati (60) said was doubtful about the vaccine administered to her. "I asked the man what injection he had given me, he said he administered a rabies vaccine," Satyawati said.

The negligence by medical staff comes at a time when the COVID-19 cases are on the rise in the state.
