Bageshwar: A 35-year-old pregnant woman died during treatment at Bageshwar district hospital early Sunday, sparking outrage among her family, who alleged medical negligence and demanded action against the staff. The incident comes amid ongoing protests over inadequate healthcare facilities, gaps in maternal care and delays in medical supervision in the region.Kavita Pathak, a resident of Sangoḍ Kotmanya in Pithoragarh, developed complications late on Saturday and was initially taken to Berinag hospital, which referred her to Bageshwar. Authorities said she had allegedly taken abortion pills a few days after conception, resulting in severe internal bleeding. Doctors at the district hospital began emergency treatment, but her condition worsened and she died shortly thereafter.Family members alleged delays in treatment and claimed the hospital demanded Rs 4,000 for procedures. Kavita's mother, Draupadi Devi, said, "They told us everything was fine. We don't know what happened that my daughter died. She has two small children. We are devastated."Her father-in-law, Shiv Datt Pathak, added that Kavita, who had low haemoglobin, was initially denied the blood they brought. "They gave her other medicines that worsened her condition, then later transfused blood without informing us and demanded Rs 4,000," he said.Chief medical superintendent Dr Tapan Sharma said, "Our team tried its best to save her, but the bleeding was too severe." He assured a thorough inquiry and added, "If any staff member is found guilty, strict action will be taken."
