Instances of mop / foreign objects accidently left inside patient’s body after surgery are being reported at an alarming rate. This case is one such unfortunate incident.
The patient’s husband in this case sued a doctor for the fatally adverse outcome of very high sugar level. His wife had visited this doctor with complains of fever, body ache and joint pain. The doctor diagnosed Chikungunya – which was rampant at the time – and administered an injection.
The patient – a first time young mother – underwent forceps delivery. Unfortunately it resulted into 4th degree tear in the perineum area – the patient lost control over passing urine and stool. She consulted the gynaecologist several times who kept changing medicines but to no avail.
The patient experienced pain in hip and approached the orthopaedic surgeon who performed total hip replacement (THR). Usually considered a relatively uneventful procedure, the outcome of THR in this instance was anything but ordinary.
Can a general surgeon perform gynaecological procedures such as hysterectomy? Yes. But the presence of a gynaecologist is a must, ruled National Consumer Commission in this case.
The patient had visited the gynaecologist with complains of excessive bleeding. The doctor, along with a surgeon, performed total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH). As it turned out, the patient also suffered from umbilical hernia.
