Agartala, 24th July 2025: A shocking case of alleged medical negligence has emerged from the state’s premier IGM Hospital in Agartala, where the urinary tract of a 19-year-old woman was allegedly stitched post-delivery, leading to two surgeries within 24 hours and widespread outrage.
According to the patient’s family, the incident took place when Rahul Biswas, a resident of the Belabar area in Agartala, brought his pregnant wife, Papia Das, to IGM Hospital on Tuesday after she began experiencing labour pains. Papia, who had recently married, gave birth on Wednesday morning. However, what followed turned into a nightmare for the young mother.
Family members alleged that the on-duty doctor mistakenly stitched Papia’s urinary tract after the delivery. As her condition worsened, they sought immediate help from the attending medical team. Shockingly, the doctor allegedly refused to visit the ward despite repeated calls, sending a nurse instead, who too failed to act appropriately.
As Papia’s health deteriorated, family members demanded urgent intervention. When confronted, the doctor allegedly asked them to sign documents without providing clarity on the medical condition. The family refused, insisting that the patient be treated first. Tensions escalated, prompting hospital staff and doctors to call the police in a bid to manage the situation.
However, the family stood their ground, refusing to be intimidated. Eventually, under mounting pressure, IGM Hospital provided a referral, and Papia was shifted to GBP Hospital, where an emergency surgery was conducted. She is currently under observation and said to be recovering gradually, but her condition remains critical.
Rahul Biswas, the patient’s husband, has demanded a fair and impartial inquiry into the shocking incident. “This isn’t just negligence; this is cruelty. We want the Chief Minister and Health Department to take strict action against those responsible,” he said.
As public outrage begins to mount, questions loom large over the accountability of IGM Hospital. Will the Health Department constitute an investigation committee? Will justice be delivered?
Unless stringent action is taken, the name IGM Hospital may soon become synonymous with fear and medical horror in Tripura.
