A paediatrician at Bonai subdivisional hospital in Sundargarh district was transferred on Thursday over medical negligence after he reportedly prescribed an anti-rabies vaccine to a four-year-old patient who had not been bitten by any animal. The girl, a resident of Bonai, was taken to the hospital on July 28 with a herpes-like mark on her waist. Despite the absence of any animal bite, the doctor prescribed the vaccine, which was subsequently administered by the hospital staff. The child's condition reportedly worsened, with allergic reactions and fever.Upon returning to the hospital on July 30, the girl's parents confronted the doctor, who allegedly tore up the original prescription and issued a new one. He reportedly downplayed the situation, suggesting the vaccine was a routine immunisation and advised completing the course with two more doses. The incident prompted an inquiry led by Sibasish Maharana, chief district medical officer in-charge, Sundargarh. Following the investigation, the doctor was reassigned to a community health centre.
