The KZN Health Department has been ordered to pay R10 million to a mother for a medical negligence claim.

The financially stretched KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health has been ordered to pay a Bulwer mother R10 million in damages after her daughter was born handicapped due to medical negligence.

These claims, which now account for close to half of the department’s R50 billion budget, increased by a staggering R3 billion last year, The Witness reported early this month.

While the department has already made interim payment of R2 million in the latest claim, the Pietermaritzburg High Court ordered this week that the balance of R8 million must be paid on or before May 26.
