Bhopal: As many as 13 infants have died during treatment at Shahdol district hospital in Madhya Pradesh in the last eight days. Two deaths took place on Friday, five between December 1 and 3 and six between November 27 and 30.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had, on Monday (November 30), ordered an inquiry into the deaths of six infants that took place in the last four days of November. He had asked officials to find out if medical negligence was responsible for the deaths of the infants, and instructed that if required, specialist doctors be sent to Shahdol from Jabalpur. While the inquiry is underway, seven more infants, admitted in the hospital, have died since then, according to a report by The Times of India.

Officials, during the inquiry, found no specific reason for the deaths of the infants, Shahdol CHMO Dr Rajesh Pandey said, adding that majority of the deaths happened due to pneumonia and late hospitalisation.

“Of the 13 infants who have died, nearly 50 per cent are from other districts. Shahdol being divisional headquarters, people from other districts also come here and the children were brought late… We are reviewing the situation every day and proper care is being taken,” the TOI report quoted Pandey as saying.
