National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday took cognisance of an alleged case of medical negligence at the Malkangiri district headquarters hospital (DHH) in which a seven-year-old girl died in June due to a delay in treatment, and directed the state govt to submit an action taken report (ATR) within four weeks. The matter was heard by NHRC following a complaint filed by Jeypore-based advocate and human rights activist Anup Kumar Patro seeking direction to the chief secretary to order a thorough inquiry into the incident, fix responsibility, initiate action against those found guilty, and award adequate compensation to the bereaved parents.According to the complaint, the daughter of Lalit Patra, a resident of Sadar area in Malkangiri district, sustained a serious head injury while playing near her house on June 15. Family members rushed the child to the DHH for emergency treatment. However, the complaint alleges that despite the critical injury, the child did not receive timely attention from the senior doctor concerned.
