Tension gripped the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal after the death of a 35-year-old woman following complications from a surgical delivery on Sunday. Alleging medical negligence, family members and locals vandalised hospital property and assaulted a senior doctor, sparking chaos on the campus.
The incident led the Teachers and Medical Officers Association (TAMOA), RIMS, to announce an indefinite shutdown of all services, including OPD and emergency care, until those responsible for the assault are arrested.
Hospital authorities expressed grief over the woman’s untimely demise and assured her family that the case would be reviewed with “utmost seriousness.” At the same time, they condemned the violence, warning that damaging property and assaulting medical staff are unlawful acts that could attract serious legal consequences.
TAMOA, in its statement, strongly denounced the “false allegations” and attack on one of its senior consultants. It demanded a safe working environment for medical professionals and firm action against the culprits before normal services resume.
The hospital also appealed to the public to maintain peace, respect institutions, and resolve grievances through lawful means rather than resorting to violence.
The Association clarified that patients already admitted will continue to receive care and attention.
