A woman and her newborn son are in critical condition after a vacuum-assisted delivery was performed at a private hospital in Hapur, authorities said on Saturday. An investigation has been launched into allegations of medical negligence.
Chief medical officer Dr Sunil Kumar Tyagi said that a complaint was received from a resident of Pilakhua, who alleged that his wife was admitted to a private hospital on Hapur-Bulandshahr road.
During delivery, when the woman stopped responding and fell unconscious, the doctors performed a vacuum-assisted delivery during which the child received life-threatening injuries to the head. "A probe has been ordered to determine whether an untrained individual carried out the procedure," said Tyagi. "Improper use of vacuum extraction can lead to cerebral haemorrhage. We are gathering information from GS Medical College, where the infant is currently receiving treatment. The complainant has submitted medical records indicating oxygen deprivation to the newborn's brain during initial assessment, and the baby is undergoing brain ultrasonography. The mother also remains under medical supervision," the CMO added.
This incident comes after another controversy involving a private hospital in Hapur, which was sealed on Jan 15, for allegedly performing unauthorized hysterectomies on two women. Authorities had taken action after it was revealed that the procedures were conducted without the patients' consent.
