Jaipur: An investigation into a critical medical error at PBM Hospital in Bikaner has confirmed that a 75-year-old woman was mistakenly given the wrong blood type, a potentially life-threatening mistake.Despite the severity of the incident, which occurred on Dec 17, the hospital has opted for mere internal relocations of the involved medical staff, but no suspensions have been issued, sparking concern over accountability and patient safety in govt hospitals. The hospital has discharged the affected woman, claiming that she has recovered well. This incident marks the fifth occurrence of wrong blood transfusions in govt-run hospitals over the past two years, with four of these cases resulting in fatalities. The investigation report, which has now been made public, details how the elderly patient was transfused with B positive blood instead of her correct A positive type. The grave error was averted from becoming fatal only due to the alert patient's immediate complaint of adverse symptoms, prompting the medical staff to halt the transfusion just in time. In response to the findings, the SP Medical College—which governs the PBM Hospital—has simply reassigned posts of two resident doctors, two nurses, and a lab technician involved in the incident. However, these measures have been criticised as insufficient, with the medical staff merely being relocated rather than suspended or facing more severe disciplinary action. Dr Surendra Verma, principal and controller of SP Medical College, said Tuesday, "Based on the report of the investigation committee, we have taken action. We found them guilty of negligence." The Bikaner incident has once again cast a long shadow over the govt hospital's blood transfusion protocols and the broader state healthcare system's ability to prevent such dangerous errors. The lack of suspensions has raised eyebrows, especially given that this is the fifth such incident in the state over the past two years, with previous cases reported in Jaipur's SMS Hospital and JK Lon Hospital. A sixth incident of wrong blood transfusion was averted in the nick of time when the alert patient, a sportsperson admitted at a govt hospital in Jodhpur, noticed the error and prevented the medical staff from going ahead with the transfusion. To address the systemic lapses, the SP Medical College has issued directions to adhere to the 2015 directives of the Rajasthan State Human Rights Commission, warning department heads of their personal responsibility in preventing future errors. Meetings have been mandated to ensure strict compliance with blood transfusion guidelines. Despite these measures, the superficial action against the guilty in PBM Hospital has left many questioning the state health department's commitment to genuine accountability and reforms.
