A shocking case of medical negligence has come to light at Melaghar Hospital, where a critically ill patient was referred to another hospital with a half-finished oxygen cylinder, nearly resulting in a fatal incident.
The incident occurred late on Monday night when Sulekha Sarkar, a resident of Rajghat area in Melaghar, was being transported for further treatment due to severe respiratory distress.
According to reports, as soon as the patient reached Bairagi Bazar, the oxygen supply in the cylinder ran out, leaving her gasping for breath. The family, in a state of panic, rushed her to Bishramganj Hospital, where temporary measures were taken to stabilize her condition. From there, she was referred to Vishalgarh Subdivision Hospital, where the patient’s family members protested upon arrival, outraged at the gross negligence of the doctors at Melaghar Hospital.
Doctors at Bishalgarh Subdivision Hospital promptly administered oxygen, stabilizing Sulekha Sarkar’s condition. However, due to the severity of her illness, she was immediately transferred to Agartala GBP Hospital for advanced treatment.
The incident has sparked widespread anger and concern among locals and healthcare professionals alike. Questions are being raised about how a patient in critical condition could be referred with an oxygen cylinder that was not adequately filled. Had the patient succumbed to respiratory failure en route, who would have taken responsibility for such a tragic outcome?
The negligence of the medical staff at Melaghar Hospital has drawn sharp criticism from the public. There is now growing demand for a thorough inquiry into the matter and strict action against those responsible. Authorities from the State Health Department have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
