A family has alleged a medical negligence against a private hospital in Kesnand after a newborn died during childbirth. The baby’s father has submitted a written complaint to the Wagholi Police and have asked for an action to be taken against those responsible.

According to the complaint, the incident occurred on June 21 at Shashwat Hospital, where Dipali Rakesh Moze had been receiving antenatal care for the past seven months.

The complaint states that Dipali was admitted to the hospital at around 5.30 a.m. after she went into labour. By 10 a.m., her water had broken and she was reportedly experiencing severe pain. The attending doctors initially attempted a normal delivery. When it became intense that a natural delivery was not possible, the family was informed that a caesarean section would be required, and the husband’s consent was obtained.

However, the complainant has alleged that the hospital was not prepared to perform the surgery immediately. According to the complaint, the treating doctor contacted an obstetrician and an anaesthetist only after the decision for a caesarean section had been made. As a result, the surgery was allegedly delayed by nearly one to one-and-a-half hours as no specialists were immediately available.

During the delay, the complaint alleges that the uterus ruptured and placental abruption occurred which caused blood to enter the baby’s nose and mouth and leading to a drop in oxygen levels. The caesarean section was eventually performed after the specialists arrived.

As the newborn showed no signs of movement after delivery, the baby was shifted by ambulance to a hospital in Pune. The complainant has further alleged that he was not permitted to accompany the baby in the ambulance and had to travel separately on a two-wheeler. Doctors at the Pune hospital later declared the baby dead after which the family performed the last rites.

The complaint also alleges that when family members later approached the hospital seeking an explanation, they were threatened by individuals allegedly called by the hospital staff. An NC (non-cognisable) offence has reportedly been registered in connection with that incident.

Wagholi Police said they have received the written complaint and are examining the allegations. Further action will be taken after verifying all the facts and evidences based on the findings of the inquiry.
