Baripada: A woman became critical due to alleged medical negligence during removal of an Intrauterine Device (IUD) copper-T, a kind of  contraceptive tool, from her uterus at Khadigaan health centre under Khunta block here in Mayurbhanj district.

The woman identified as Shantilata Naik, a resident of Brundagadi under Udala police limits in the district was admitted to the health centre for removal of the contraceptive device on Saturday.

However, the health professional had removed it out of her uterus in a faulty manner, she alleged.

Soon after removing it, the woman health worker applied some acid-type liquid instead of appropriate medicine leading to burn like injuries, she alleged.

“As she poured the liquid, I started screaming due to severe burn pain. No one came to my rescue. My husband immediately shifted me to Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital at Baripada,” she said.

Manas Kumar Naik, husband of the victim said that the nurse has admitted to her mistake and agreed to bear all treatment expenses.

“Soon after the operation, she had left the place. I apprised her about my wife’s condition over phone, but she ignored the incident. She has not yet come to the hospital,” Manas said.

On the other hand, the woman’s condition has improved following treatment at Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College.
