AGARTALA: The High Court of Tripura on Thursday directed the state government to take suitable action against Anima Debbarma, the deputy secretary of health and family welfare department, for filing incorrect affidavit to the court in connection with the unnatural death of a young advocate in the city in March 2020 and upgrade the trauma care facilities by this month.
A high court division bench headed by Chief Justice Indrajit Mahanty expressed displeasure at the officer for inaccurate statement denying the charge of medical negligence on the part of the on-duty doctor at the trauma centre of Agartala Government Medical College and giving misleading facts about the cause of death of the lawyer, which appeared to be incorrect in the magisterial and death audit reports.
Deputy secretary Debbarma in the court said the deceased, Bhaskar Debroy, was brought to the hospital by fire brigade personnel on March 7, 2020. At 12.59 am, Dr Debasish Paul attended the patient and recorded that he was conscious adding that he himself said that he had consumed alcohol.
However, the magisterial report said, “There was medical negligence on the part of Dr Debasish Paul when consciously and voluntarily failed to give reasonable care to the patient. Not providing ‘standard care’ to Debroy led to his unfortunate death.”
