Tension prevailed at Nayagarh District Headquarters Hospital on Saturday night after a pregnant woman and her unborn child allegedly died due to medical negligence. The incident triggered anger among family members and locals, leading to protests within the hospital premises, prompting a strong police presence to maintain order.

According to sources, 27-year-old Mamata Swain was admitted to the hospital late Friday night after she began experiencing intense labour pains. However, her family alleged that despite the critical condition, the on-duty doctors and nurses delayed providing the necessary medical care.

This alleged delay and negligence led to Mamata and her unborn baby boy losing their lives before any proper treatment could be administered, the family claimed.

“There was no sense of urgency among the medical staff. We kept pleading, but they ignored us,” said a relative of the deceased.

Public Outcry and Police Intervention

As news of the double death spread, relatives and locals gathered at the hospital, demanding accountability and strict action against those responsible. The situation escalated, leading to heated confrontations with hospital authorities.

In response, Nayagarh Sadar Police rushed to the hospital and began an investigation. To prevent further unrest, one platoon of police force was deployed to secure the hospital and pacify the grieving crowd.

“We have taken note of the matter and will investigate the family’s claims of medical negligence. Since the probe is yet to begin, no further comments can be said at this point in time,” said Nayagarh Additional SP, S Kala.
