Assam Police have arrested a nurse from Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) in connection with the death of a four-day-old infant at the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Mrinal Deka said a case (No. 140/25) has been registered at Bhangagarh Police Station. The nurse, identified as Bhanupriya Misong, who was in charge of the NICU on the day of the incident, has been taken into custody for investigation.

The incident occurred on August 18, prompting Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to visit GMCH. Describing the case as “deeply painful,” he directed officials to examine CCTV footage and ordered a thorough inquiry.

While the GMCH Principal has initiated an internal probe, the state government has set up a three-member high-level committee comprising Additional Chief Secretary L. Sweety Changsan, Dr. Anup Barman, and a child specialist from AIIMS to investigate the matter.

The Chief Minister said responsibility will be fixed and strict action will be taken if medical negligence is established.
