Woman dies after surgery, family alleges medical negligence - Independent Review

Following the death of a woman after being discharged from the hospital, the family members of the deceased staged a protest on Tuesday in front of a private hospital in the city.

Honi Yaniya, a 64-year-old, underwent a minor knee surgery at the Samaritan Hormin Hospital, Naharlagun on Saturday. Later, on Monday, the deceased experienced breathing difficulties and her stomach began to swell up.

The deceased’s relatives said that the patient died owing to alleged negligence in treatment by doctors.

Relatives alleged that the orthopedic surgeon who had operated on the deceased was informed of her condition. “The patient was discharged from the hospital after surgeon termed the condition as normal. However, after 15 minutes later, the patient’s condition started to deteriorate on the way back home. The patient was rushed to the hospital again where the deceased was declared brought dead.”

The body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem at TRIHMS, Naharlagun.

Speaking to this daily, SDPO Naharlagun police station, Rike Kamsi said that the

“An FIR has been lodged at Naharlagun PS and we are waiting for post-mortem result to determine the cause of death,” SDPO Rike Kamsi told this daily over phone, adding that security arrangements have been made around the Samaritan Hormin Hospital.

Meanwhile, the District Magistrate and Deputy Commissioner (in-charge), Itanagar Capital Region, Talo Potom and SP Jimmy Chiram also visited the hospital premises on Monday evening and took stock of the situation.

Two separate FIRs have been registered at Naharlagun PS – one from the deceased’s family and other from the hospital administration against deceased’s family for damaging the hospital properties and assaulting the healthcare worker, SP Chiram said.

Dr Lobsang Tsetim, president, Indian Medical Association (IMA), Arunachal Pradesh chapter condemned the assault on the healthcare worker.

He added: “A meeting was today held between IMA executives and deceased’s family members along with a team of doctors wherein it was resolved to avoid further violence.”
