Thiruvananthapuram: Family of a newborn baby, who died hours after birth at a private hospital in the city on Thursday, alleged medical negligence by the hospital. The delivery was scheduled for Thursday, but the mother, Athira of Andoorkonam, was admitted on Wednesday evening with a fever. Athira gave birth at 11:15pm, but the baby soon developed breathing difficulties and heartbeat variations. The newborn was rushed to SAT Hospital, where the baby died around 3:30am.The relatives of Athira alleged that the baby was taken to SAT Hospital in an ambulance that lacked a ventilator facility. They also alleged that the mother developed fever due to a rupture in the amniotic sac and leakage of fluid. The hospital staff noticed it only at the final moment and it affected the health of the baby."The baby's health worsened soon after delivery. Taking the baby in a normal ambulance further worsened the health. There was medical negligence and it has to be probed," said Santhosh Kumar, Athira's brother.Athira visited the hospital on Monday for a final check-up, but nothing problematic was spotted, he added.Kazhakkoottam police registered a case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for unnatural death and began a probe. "We are yet to get a postmortem report to confirm the exact cause of death. Talking to doctors concerned, we came to know that the mother developed a fever due to a leak of amniotic fluid. The mother had a 101-degree Celsius temperature when admitted to the hospital, and it affected the health of the baby as well. The medical records of Athira are sought from the hospital for further probe," said police.
