A 50-year-old man from the Amraiwadi area of the city died on Sunday after undergoing angioplasty under Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) at a private hospital in Bapunagar, police said.
The family members of the deceased, Arvind Parmar, a daily wager, alleged medical negligence and demanded that police conduct a fair probe into the case.
The case has drawn attention amid the controversy surrounding the quality of cardiac care in PM-JAY empanelled hospitals following angioplasty deaths at Khyati Hospital, which is accused of carrying out the procedure unnecessarily to avail of PM-JAY benefits.
Inspector MD Chandrawadia of Shaherkotda police said Parmar complained of chest pain at around 4.30am on Sunday and was rushed to a private hospital in Bapunagar.
After preliminary investigation, doctors diagnosed Parmar with heart-related issues. He was advised to come at around 10am, when a cardiologist would be present, and prescribed primary medicines such as blood thinner.
At around 10 am on Sunday, Parmar returned to the hospital and was checked by a cardiologist who found that there were blocks ranging from 40-90% in three of his arteries. On the advice of the doctors, he underwent immediate angiography and angioplasty.
Chandrawadia said that after the procedure, he was shifted to the ICU from the operating theatre where he remained stable for half an hour. He then started complaining about chest pain and uneasiness, prompting immediate medical intervention. However, he could not be saved.
Parmar's family members protested at the hospital, alleging medical negligence. Chandrawadia said he also spoke to the doctors who submitted the videography of the angioplasty and suggested sending it to other experts for the purpose of investigation. He said a case of accidental death will be registered.
