Jaipur: In a case of what appears to be grave medical negligence, a 10-year-old boy suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD) was administered blood of two different groups in three days at a govt-run childcare specialty in Jaipur, worsening his condition and further complicating the ongoing treatment.
The boy, who is admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of JK Lon Hospital and has a blood type of O+, was administered AB+ blood type on Dec 5. Two days later, when his condition turned critical, and a second transfusion was needed, he was administered the correct blood type: O+.
The hospital management said in a statement it suspects that samples sent to the blood bank might have been exchanged with those of another patient. The matter is now under investigation, said the hospital administration.
"We are closely monitoring the health of the young patient who received blood of two different groups. There is no evidence of blood reaction. The blood transfusion has not deteriorated his medical condition," said Dr Kailash Meena, medical superintendent of JK Lon Hospital to TOI.
After being diagnosed with CKD, the 10-year-old was brought to JK Lon Hospital in a critical condition on Dec 4 and admitted to an ICU there. He was put on ventilator support and received the first transfusion of AB+ blood on Dec 5 and O+ blood on Dec 7.
"The boy's condition currently remains critical, and he is on ventilator support as he has hypoplastic kidneys (underdeveloped kidneys). He was administered blood twice due to CKD and dialysis," said Dr Meena.
In a similar case of wrong blood transfusion at Jaipur's SMS Medical College, the condition of 23-year-old Sachin Sharma, a road accident victim, had turned critical during surgery on Feb 12. He died on Feb 23.
